ABOUT THE ARTIST

John Richardson is the artist behind such companies as Wally co Greeting Cards and The Flash of Brilliance Company… a children’s flash card company.

I realized early on that I’m not interested in being taught someone else’s version of what art should be. I’m stubborn that way. For me, art is something to explore on my own terms—its authenticity, its energy, and especially its quirks.

I discover my work by making it. Each piece is a personal journey, and I rarely know where it’s headed until it arrives. I gravitate toward mixed media because it gives me a wider field of expression. Some days, I create a photomontage and then reinterpret it as a painting—translating a digital composition into a physical, painted form. Other times, I’ll start with paint on wood panel, then layer in photographic elements, attaching them with clear-gloss gel. I’m always chasing variety—of texture, color, material, and emotional tone.

I’m drawn to large-scale formats and broad visual perspectives. I want my art to feel expansive, to offer viewers a sense of openness or escape. But I don’t believe in prescribing how anyone should experience it. Each viewer brings their own lens, and that’s where meaning is made. I’m not here to tell you what a piece is about—I want you to decide that for yourself. My job is to create the environment for that discovery.

My art lives in the space between fantasy and reality, between surrealism and realism. Each piece is an invitation to imagine—an opportunity to step into another world. I hope you feel pulled in, like you could get lost inside the image, let it live in you a little, and maybe even change you along the way.
